Infertility in couples may have many causes, whether on the side of the woman or that of the man. Common causes of repeated miscarriages or the birth of a child with a congenital developmental defect could mean there are some genetic abnormalities in the embryo. Generally, statistics show that more than half of spontaneous miscarriages in the first trimester of pregnancy are caused by genetic abnormalities. The bearer of all genetic information is the DNA stored in each cell nucleus and arranged in chromosomes. The correct structure and number of chromosomes in the egg, sperm and subsequent embryo are necessary for the successful implantation of the embryo and the birth of a healthy baby. Today’s modern medicine, however, already knows the genetic status of the embryo before its transfer to the woman’s womb.
Preimplantation testing of embryos
REPROMEDA – one of the largest assisted reproduction clinics in the Czech Republic – applies genetic diagnosis to more than half of its clients. REPROMEDA was the first in the Czech Republic and Central and Eastern Europe to perform preimplantation embryo testing in 2000. Modern Assisted Reproduction offers methods of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) and Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) and allows the selection of so-called “healthy embryos” without specific genetic burden before transfer to the woman’s womb. “Using the PGD method, it is possible to detect genetic disorders of the embryos, both in couples with a history of a disease in the family and in cases where both parents are healthy and are only carriers of a disease. PGS helps again in cases of repeated failure of embryo implantation, miscarriages, or in couples with an age factor. These procedures are the only reliable methods to prevent the birth of a child with a serious genetic defect,” explains MUDr. Kate?ina Veselá, Ph.D., Director of the reproduction clinic Repromeda.

Genetic testing before conception
If a couple plan having a baby and want to know if there is a possibility of the birth of a child with a genetic disease, it is possible to have preventive testing of mutual reproductive-genetic compatibility. The examination is suitable for healthy couples who are planning a baby together, whether with the help of assisted reproduction or spontaneously. “When these tests show that the couple is not genetically compatible, it does not mean that they cannot have a baby together. It is, nonetheless, a signal that we can help eliminate this transmission and the development of this disease in their offspring. Thanks to the PGD method, we are able to select a suitable embryo without this particular genetic burden”, adds MUDr. Kate?ina Veselá from Repromeda.
When genetics do not work… Try holistic medicine
The REPROMEDA clinic has extensive experience in linking modern western medicine with alternative procedures. Traditional Chinese medicine, for example, is no longer a method used only in the Far East, but on the contrary, there is an increasing rapprochement with western medicine.
While modern medicine seeks to detect the effect of infertility and effective treatment to eliminate the problem, complementary medicine does not just focus on the treatment of a particular disease but treats the person as a whole. It is about finding the cause of the problem of becoming pregnant and setting up a balance in the body, which then leads to the proper functioning of the organs, which leads to conception and delivery of the child.
When to choose alternative treatment?
To solve the problem and gain harmony in the body, holistic medicine uses a number of methods and procedures from acupuncture, herbal treatments – phytotherapy, yoga exercises and Cchi-kung, and special nutrition to massage or cupping. “The use of alternative methods using traditional Chinese medicine is common among treated couples. Sometimes they are interested in trying out support options right from the start, sometimes resorting to these procedures only in the case of repeated pregnancy loss, embryo transfer failure or low endometrium lining. If a couple decides, for example, for phytotherapy, the treatment needs to be carried out for at least 3 to 6 months. According to the problem, after this time, the embryo transfer is performed or the whole cycle of IVF cycle is started,” explains the Director of the reproductive clinic Repromeda, MUDr. Kate?ina Veselá, Ph.D., who has repeatedly managed to achieve pregnancies in women, thanks to traditional Chinese medicine methods, when the standard practices of western medicine have not worked. For this reason, they have begun to expand the alternative medicine clinic.
In addition to phytotherapy, a special herbal treatment, the Repromeda clinic also directly performs acupuncture or new bioresonance therapy. The overall advantage, however, is that the clinic can professionally and purposefully set up a suitable alternative treatment method to correctly administer the most effective complementary treatment method and to contribute towards increasing success in the treatment of infertility.
