About Center of Reproductive Medicine “Embrions”
The Center of Reproductive Medicine “Embrions” has been helping families have children since 1997.
The clinic was founded by Dr Gints Treijs. Over 30 years ago, he was the first doctor in Latvia to perform the ICSI procedure. This helped start modern fertility treatment in the country. Dr. Treijs is an Honorary Member of the Latvian Human Reproduction Society, which shows his important role in reproductive medicine in Latvia.
In 2025, the clinic began a new chapter under the leadership of Dr Zane Vītiņa, a well-known IVF specialist in Europe. Dr. Zane Vītiņa is the Clinic Director and Chair of the Board of the Latvian Society of Reproduction. She has received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Ministry of Health of Latvia for her work in supporting families and helping address demographic challenges in Latvia and abroad.

To understand the size and experience of the clinic, it is helpful to know that in 2024, “Embrions” performed 799 treatment cycles. This included 754 IVF cycles using patients’ own eggs and 245 egg donation cycles.
The clinic welcomes a wide range of patients, including single women and same-sex female couples. Treatment is also available for patients who are HIV positive or who have hepatitis B or C (both women and men).
Patients living with HIV or hepatitis B/C are accepted provided they submit a certificate from an infectious disease specialist confirming their medical condition. In cases of chronic HBV, HCV, or HIV infection, an additional co-payment of €200 applies for ICSI treatment. For patients with hepatitis B or C, the medical certificate must confirm that there is no acute infection and that the condition is chronic and stable.
There is no strict maximum age limit for patients. While treatment is generally offered to women up to 55 years of age, every case is assessed individually and responsibly, based on the patient’s overall health condition. Please contact th clinic to find out if you can be aligible.
Experience and Medical Staff at Center of Reproductive Medicine “Embrions”
At “Embrions”, patients are supported by a skilled team of fertility experts working together in one place. The team includes reproductive medicine specialists, gynecologists, embryologists, endocrinologists, urologists, and experienced surgical staff. The clinic provides IVF, ICSI, fertility preservation treatments, and advanced gynecological surgeries in its fully equipped hospital unit.
Dr Zane Vītiņa (pictured above) is the CEO and Chief Physician of “Embrions” and has more than 23 years of experience in fertility treatment. She is a specialist in gynecology, obstetrics, and reproductive medicine, and she supports patients with personalized treatment plans that may include medication, minimally invasive procedures, and IVF. In addition to fertility care, she also has strong experience in pregnancy management and gynecological ultrasound.
Dr Vītiņa is Chair of the Board of the Latvian Society of Reproduction. She speaks English, Latvian, and Russian. Due to high demand, waiting times for appointments with dr Vītiņa may be longer.
Male fertility is treated with the same importance as female fertility. Care for male patients is provided by Dr Andris Ābele (pictured above), a urologist and andrologist certified by the European Academy of Andrology. He also performs specialized surgical procedures when needed. The clinic offers detailed sperm testing, including spermogram, MAR test, HBA test, DNA fragmentation testing, and oxidative stress evaluation. For patients coming from abroad, testing is well organized to avoid delays in treatment.
Hormonal health is another key part of care at “Embrions”. Hormones affect ovarian stimulation, egg quality, sperm production, embryo implantation, and IVF outcomes. The clinic works closely with experienced endocrinologists who specialize in infertility, including Dr Eva Barkāne and Dr Sabīne Upmale-Engela (also pictured above). Hormonal factors are carefully assessed and managed as part of a coordinated and personalized treatment plan.
Dr Sabīne Upmale-Engela diagnoses and treats internal secretion gland diseases (thyroid gland, pituitary gland, adrenal gland, pancreas, ovary, testis), diseases caused by metabolic regulation disorders (diabetes, obesity) or other changes in the endocrine system. Increasingly interested in the endocrine aspects of infertility, changes in sex hormones.
Dr Eva Barkāne specializes in gynaecological endocrinology issues – all kinds of hormonal dysfunction, hyperprolactinemia, PCOS, hirsutism, and androgenic alopecia. Specializes also in hormonal and immunological treatment of infertility, recurrent pregnancy terminations and retention, offers prevention and treatment of gynaecological diseases, prenatal monitoring, and gynaecological US (ultrasonography).
Other doctors include:
- dr Egīls Gasiņš – specializes in operative gynaecology and infertility treatment,
- dr Agnese Plēpe – specializes in gynecological diseases and their prevention options,
- dr Kristīna Prostaka – gynecologist and reproductive medicine specialist,
- dr Elīna Mīkstā – gynaecologist-reproductologist,
- dr Līva Ķīse – specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of pregnancy complications and provides consultations on pregnancy planning.
All doctors speak English and Russian. Additionally, dr Sabīne Upmale-Engela speaks German.
Embryology Laboratory Team
The clinic reports strong egg donation success rates, consistently higher than the European average. One of the main reasons for these results is the quality of its embryology laboratory. While the IVF treatment plan is important, the work of embryologists in the lab plays a major role in embryo development and overall treatment success.

The Embryology Department is led by Dr Vineta Aukone, who also heads the Tissue and Cell Center. She is an ESHRE-certified Senior Embryologist and Certified Laboratory Physician with 18 years of experience. Her knowledge helps maintain high laboratory standards and careful embryo handling.
For patients, this means your embryos are cared for by a highly trained specialist who works with precision and attention every single day. Under her leadership, the laboratory follows strict quality standards, and each embryo is handled with the highest level of care. From fertilization to embryo development, every step is closely monitored to give your treatment the best possible chance of success.

Embryo Donation Packages
Patients can also choose donor embryos (either embryos donated by other patients who meet the clinic’s strict donor criteria or frozen embryos created from donor eggs and donor sperm). The embryos are readily available at “Embrions.”
- Ready Frozen Embryo Package – €2,500 (includes thawing, assisted hatching and embryo transfer). This package uses frozen embryos created from double donation — meaning both the egg and the sperm come from qualified donors. The embryos are already created and frozen. The price includes preparing the embryo (thawing), assisted hatching if needed, and transferring the embryo into the uterus.
- Ready Frozen Embryo Donation Package – €2,030 (includes thawing, assisted hatching and embryo transfer). These embryos were donated by previous patients who decided to help other families. The embryology team carefully selects only embryos that meet strict medical and screening standards before they are offered for adoption.
- Embryo Donation Package with PGT-A – €4,010. This option includes embryos that have already been genetically tested (PGT-A). Genetic testing checks the number of chromosomes in the embryo, which can help reduce the risk of genetic abnormalities and improve the chances of implantation.
At “Embrions”, both egg and sperm donors are carefully selected and matched individually, without the use of AI systems. Matching is done by the medical team based on physical characteristics and compatibility. Patients can receive information about the donor’s education, hobbies, and physical features such as eye colour, hair colour, and height. Donors are available from white (European) and Scandinavian backgrounds, and there is no waiting time for embryo donation.
The Center of Reproductive Medicine “Embrions” provides a wide range of advanced IVF technologies that are internationally recognized and legally permitted in Latvia.
One of these options is oocyte activation (€230), which may be recommended for women of advanced reproductive age or for couples who have experienced fertilization problems or abnormal embryo development in previous cycles.
For patients with repeated implantation failure, the clinic offers embryo culture or thawing in SAGE 1-Step™ GM-CSF medium (€210), which is designed to support embryo development.
The laboratory also uses modern technologies such as the Embryoscope Time-Lapse incubator for continuous embryo monitoring and advanced sperm preparation in a micro-membrane chamber. Genetic testing options include PGT-A, PGT-M, PGT-SR, as well as additional tests such as the Growbaby test and Utimpro test. For male infertility, surgical sperm retrieval procedures are available, including TESA, PESA, and open TESE.
Egg freezing/social freezing/fertility preservation is available for €1,150.
Please note that treatments such as ROPA and surrogacy are not allowed under Latvian law.

IVF Success Rates at Center of Reproductive Medicine “Embrions”
At “Embrions”, clinical pregnancy rates with a patient’s own eggs in 2024 were:
- for women under 35 – 70%
- for women aged 35–40 – 54%
- for women over 40 – 38%
Other Clinical Pregnancy Rates (2024)
- Frozen embryo transfer (FET): 69.1%
- Embryo donation: 64%
These results are per embryo transfer and are not cumulative, meaning they reflect one transfer attempt, not several combined cycles.
As far as donor eggs are concerned, the overall success rate per embryo transfer was 77%, 75% when using fresh donor eggs and 78% when using frozen donor eggs. These results refer to one embryo transfer within a single IVF cycle. The clinic transfers on average one embryo per procedure, which supports a safer single-embryo approach.
It is important to note that these statistics do not include frozen embryo transfers from the same cycle. Some clinics include frozen transfers in their reported results, and these may also be priced separately.
The multiple birth rate in 2024 was 2.54%.
